Why the number can be wrong for you

• Real rooms are not rectangles. Out-of-square walls, sloped ceilings, bulkheads and existing finishes all change quantities.
• Installation method matters. The same wall takes different amounts of material depending on layout, framing spacing and who is doing the work.
• Product specifications vary between manufacturers and change over time. Coverage rates printed on a bag are the authority for that bag.
• Waste is a judgement, not a constant. The default factors here are typical, not guaranteed.

Structural and code matters

Anything load-bearing, anything involving rebar or grouted cores, and anything governed by building code should be confirmed with a licensed professional and your local building department. Code figures cited on this site are from model codes and your jurisdiction may amend them.

Costs

Cost ranges are rough US retail estimates used to give a sense of scale. They exclude labour, delivery, tools, tax and regional variation, and material prices move constantly. Never budget from them.
